Schizo-Somatic Proposition, 24th of October, 3-5pm

Please join us for the next schizo-somatic proposition, this time activated by Hanako Hoshimi-Caines. I like dancing I like dancing I’ve been looking for a way to dance and a new way of thinking my way into dancing. I’ve tried not thinking as the way to get free in dance – because for me working on dancing seems to involve working toward and through degrees of freedom or access to freedom, which seems to come hand in hand with power and the unconscious. But either not thinking is a total illusion, or I cannot operate without it: I need a frame, cause I can’t pretend that I feel totally there, all at once. Maybe this is the structure of my fragmenting kinda-mostly-white western brain-being. But this situation, this commitment, is not a choice, so I work with it. The frame/thinking (the sledgehammer) is the process of entry into what I’d call a “real” dance, and what I mean by real is that it is a dance that destroys and creates all at the same time. It’s powerful and slippery, sludgy and sharp, and goddamn if anything is not allowed in it. I am testing out the truth to see if it might be a temporary access/frame/pass to a break/make dance. Hanako Hoshimi-Caines is a choreographer and dancer based in Montreal. She is committed to an emo-critical engagement with dance, choreography and philosophy as a way to see, feel and love better. She has danced for a lot of choreographers here and in Europe. Her solo and collaborative works have been shown in performance and music festivals as well as...

Schizo-Somatics meet Stirring the Pot, October 17th, 4-6pm

This iteration of Schizo-somatic meets Stirring the Pot is an invitation for Grasiele Sousa and Lucio Agra at the intersection of these two ways of sharing; by schizzing and by presenting a practice in an active way. From Lucio and Grasiele: We would like to make a conversation about performance art in Brazil starting from our own experience and trying to contrast this with a collective imaginary constructed around this topic. To get to this point, we would like participants to bring anything they imagine/perceive as part of Brazilian performance art – words, materials, names, objects, sounds, gestures, images, flavors, etc. We then will arrange this cartography live. It will be like a “provisional museum” of Brazilian Performance Art, made together. Of course, there is no intention to be exhaustive; a speech act which is also an « in promptu » collage of fragments of what performance art could be in Brazil. If you don’t have any ideas, try to imagine. Lucio Agra and Grasiele Sousa are performance artists in Brazil. Grasiele holds a MdA in Studies of Subjectivity at Catholic University of Sao Paulo and is formed in Arts by Universidade Estadual de Sao Paulo. Lucio is PhD in Communication and Semiotics also at Catholic University with several essays published in the area of Performance Studies. They both were involved in the production of the seven editions of Perfor, an international festival in the city of Sao Paulo and nowadays they live and work in Bahia. Their work deals with questions around feminist trends, the place of performance art in so called peripheral countries, the politics of difference...

Schizo-somatic workshop, 3rd of October, 3-5 pm

Please join us for the next schizo-somatic workshop iteration, this time activated by Sybille Muller and Erin Robinsong. Polymorphic Microbe Bodies is a research invitation into the manifold self, through experimental meditation, choreography that is knitted in your mind and movement that might come from that, with our not entirely human bodies. Our bodies will lay still but our thoughts will move. We will explore the ecosystems of the body. We will play with scenarios from scientific research about microbes: What if we don’t own our bodies? What if our only reason to exist is to be a vessel for microbes? They were here first and they will be there last. We want to relax discomfort and disgust. We want to stimulate your microbes, your bodies, your minds via sauerkraut. We want diverse gut...

Schizo-somatic workshop 19th September, 3-5pm

Hello Everyone,   The schizo-somatic workshops are continuing, the first one of the season with André Fogliano this coming Wednesday, the 19th of September between 3-5pm in the room next to the Senselab.   Practicing the schizz with capoeira The proposition of this workshop is to move and play with two concepts that capoeira has to offer: ginga and roda. Through these moving-concepts it is possible to experience how capoeira as a anticolonial way of living raised in the undercommons (in portuguese we could call it quilombo) of the colonial plantocracy system of Brazil creates an afrosomatic practice (ginga) that maliciously and fiercely plays against and with – smiling and dancing – the major trends of Brazilian necropolitics body. It’s poetics of relation, it’s rituality sets a zone of contact (roda) in which we might be able to feel and dance intuitively with the minor tendencies, the infra-cracks, the unperceivable cuts that under normapathy conditions we would miss completely. In this sense, perhaps capoeira could be thought as a healing technique which weaves an arena of encounter where it is possible sometimes to choreographically practice the schizz, decolonize our habits, and dance the aesthetics of the sociality of blackness that surrounds us, always. The idea is to work with some very basic movements of capoeira as a lure to compose with it’s potencialities. Please come with a comfortable paints and...
‘Diversity in Diversity’ launch, Sept. 5 at 19h30 @ SenseLab

‘Diversity in Diversity’ launch, Sept. 5 at 19h30 @ SenseLab

Please join us Wednesay Sept. 5 at 19h30 for the launch of our first Minor Inflexion ‘Diversity in Diversity’ for a SpLaSh with Spazze – at SenseLab. http://www.inflexions.org/diversityindiversity/ “Because even autistics, who are most definitely neurodivergent, are diverse in an infinity of ways that expand from the neurological. This is why I use the adjective neurodiverse – to remind us that we need a concept for a diversity within diversity that isn’t measured by the standard of typicality. A diversity in diversity is one that senses fully and differentially, that lives and participates in a world still defining itself according to measures not yet in place. It includes populations historically excluded from the matrix of the human, neurodiverse life, DeafBlind life, black life, indigenous life, feminist life, trans life. It includes modes of life-living that exceed the human, that feel the more-than human world not as other but as with.” —  A kind of kaleidoscopic and spectral-optic experience of the issue will be SpLaShed across spazze using projectors, live coding, and the myriad of creature-esque contours and refracting surfaces in Spazze. Differentiating wayZ of exploring the web issue (by participants both on-site and via skype) will enjoy an expanded field for surprise and play. ~ ~ Feel free to bring/gift a back-pocket-sized mirror/reflective surface of some capacity to the event. https://media.giphy.com/media/18PApptB3CuK4zmJmw/giphy.gif 1515 Sainte-Catherine west street (E.V. building) – Room...

Schizo-somatic workshop #19 July 4, 5-7pm

Please join us for the next schizo-somatic workshop Wednesday, July 4 from 5-7pm, at SenseLab. This week’s activation is by Marcela B. The workshop gives simple and concise instructions to work with things found at hand. It presents the acts of choosing, exchanging and naming as exercises of interference and superposition that articulate how things make sense...

Schizo-somatic workshop #18 June 27, 2-4pm

Please join us for the next schizo-somatic workshop Wednesday, June 27 from 2-4pm, at SenseLab. This week’s activation is by Sean Smith, with an intervention by k.g. Guttman. We are interested in the question of the leak, specifically by a reminder from Barbara Glowczewski that Deleuze and Guattari’s ‘lignes de fuites’ means both ‘lines of flight’ and a reference to the liquid properties of leaking. What is *vital* about the leak? Or, what is vital about leak*ing*, in processual terms—the schizz? To this curiosity about the leak in schizo-somatic movement-tendencies, we’d like to weave a link to another current SenseLab thread of inquiry, namely: wondering what is vital about the leak in (speculative, schizo) financial terms (such as, leaking information to the media in advance of a market transaction, the ways that time leaks in derivative terms). We will begin with a focus on a particular type of leaking: ‘evacuation’, and the vitality affects, releases, and surges of energy which accompany them. We will follow the example offered to us by the infant and inspired by our own children (with their hiccups, burps, farts, poos, pees) to explore evacuation as a form of breathing and sounding. And then we hope to drift, or to leak out of this loose score: How is the (dis)(em)bodying of value a leakage? How does speculative finance connect to or perform the leak? How does a market evacuate? How do vitality affects emerge from evacuation as an alter-economic value...

Schizo-somatic workshop #17 June 20th, 3-5pm

Please join us for the next schizo-somatic workshop Wednesday June 20 from 3-5pm, at Sense Lab. This week activation is by Diego Gil. Summer schizo-somatics are fun. Following the impulse of the past session activated by Mayra Morales called “Let’s Dance”, we will continue dancing this next Wednesday. Why not? I propose to work with a movement technique that attends to the interruptions of the movement continuity. The aim is to listen to the ecologies of activities moving across the room, when we dance only a small part of what we consider a complete movement. We will warm up bringing awareness to the fluid and ligamentous system of the body. Then we will give shape to our movement patterns in the space, and finally we will begin to trim each movement complete actualization. No previous dance knowledge is needed. If you don’t feel like moving, the technique can be done with your imagination. Bring comfortable clothes, specially sneakers you can dance with. This specific technique is part of the dance performance project “The Half” (2010), which will be re-staged this August at Tanznacht Festival...

Schizo-somatic workshop series #16 June 13th, 3-5pm

Please come and us for the next schizo-somatic workshop next Wednesday June 13th from 3-5pm at the Senselab activated by Mayra Morales: “For this ‘Let’s Dance’ schizo- somatic activation I bring a dance practice that has built some moves in m:m’s bodyings. Basically I’ll guide a contemporary dance class. No previous knowledge needed. Just bring comfortable clothes that allow you to explore full range of body movements, from floor rolling,  to wide X’x and to small cocoons. We will engage with a traditional dance class ritual, from warm up, and what some people call developmental movement pattern explorations to collaboratively building up some rhythmic transitioning movement sequences to go from the floor to standing and viceversa. Body inversions will be encouraged. We will then move across the room with fancy chases or feet combinations, perhaps some cartwheels-like. I repeat, no previous knowledge needed, we will figure it out, or not. Toward the end we’ll make our bodies available for lifting off from the floor with some small jumps and turns. Finally we’ll learn together a small choreography to dance in quartets. And end with some cooling down and body work exercises. It will be a very invigorating session yet movement softness and ease will be massaged. So come ready to sweat and bring a water bottle! If you’re feeling the vibe, bring a fancy dance outfit, tights, pants, shorts, bodysuit, or a special dance t-shirt, but if that makes you uncomfortable bring whatever makes you feel dancy enough. I’m excited to share this practice that I usually hide in a very far corner. I hope that you can come,...
