Into the Midst: all things Red

Into the Midst: all things Red

In preparation for the Dome event Into the Midst, in and around the SAT, SenseLab members are cooking all things red. Playfully mingling and surprising the senses through culinary trickery, these crimson concoctions don’t taste quite the way one would expect. Red resonates not only with the red-light district location of the SAT, but also with the red square symbol worn in recent student protests in Quebec. > view schedule and...

Help with prep for the Dome – (Im)material Potluck

Help with prep for the Dome – (Im)material Potluck

At the last Skype meeting we decided it would be a good idea to start getting materials we can use in our exploratory interactions in preparation for going into The Dome, and ideas for concrete starting points for the interactions. MATERIALS Nathaniel has sent in detailed info on some of the key technical equipment. We also need to think of the low-tech materials. In past meetings we’ve discussed a number of ideas. The Montreal-based domers will start sourcing materials so they’re in place when everyone arrives. But to do that we need a good idea of what would be best to get. If you have ideas (as specific as possible as to type and amount, including where to get things if you have any leads) please let us know as soon as possible. Some of the things we’ve discussed: — large elastic bands (as used in the Diagram workshop last year) — light sources for shadow and light play (we need to think what might really work in the dome conditions) — reflective sheets for play with reflections Any specific ideas about these? Anything else we should add to the list? IMMATERIALS Starting points for the interactions — activity proposals, constructed situations or set-ups to work with, concepts or passages of text to jump off from (what in past events we’ve called platforms for relation). Thanks!...

SAT update news

I had a meeting with the SAT program director today. We finalized issues like access to the Dome and expectations around the public part. Everything is looking good. Here’s a rundown: 1) We now have 3 full days in the Dome, from 9-5 with tech help (1 audio specialist, 1 video specialist). Unfortunately, there wasn’t much flexibility on the dates (no access over the weekend). We have the Dome all day Thurs Oct 18, Fri Oct 19 and Mon Oct 22. 2) The public event is Mon Oct 22, 5-7 pm. This is actually outside the regular schedule of shows (Tues-Sat). That’s good because it gives us pretty much total freedom to decide on how to format it and publicize it. Basically, we’re renting the space now for a special event(something they had resisted before), rather than being part of their regular program. This also means we do not have to charge admission. 3) We have off-site workspace at the SenseLab for before the 18th and over the weekend (20-21). Céline Pereira is looking into the possibility of also having access to a larger (1300 sq. ft), empty space at the Darling Foundary, where she is now working (http://www.fonderiedarling.org/index_e.html). We’ll let you know soon if that works out. 4) The Food Lab is closed on Mondays. We can probably arrange to use some of their space for our own food/refreshments, etc, if we wish. If we wanted to, we could also talk to them about opening the bar or even provided some food that day, for a price (depending on how much they ask and how our budget is doing)....
Into the Midst (Oct 2012)

Into the Midst (Oct 2012)

> view schedule and activities Into the Midst is a five-day collaborative research-creation workshop in the SATosphere, the Society for Art and Technology’s interactive immersive projection environment. The  workshop will feature hands-on experimentation toward exploring the potential for this environment to host the emergence of new forms of experience. The experimentation will  be accompanied by explorations in the philosophy of experience aimed at fashioning a vocabulary adequate to the emergent immersive potential. Key issues the workshop will address are: how interactive live movement within the space can modulate the experience of the projected space (and vice versa) in ways that alter habitual modes of perception; how the relationship between inside and outside spaces might be modulated, using the SAT building and its immediate urban surroundings as raw material; how frustrations of expectations regarding the responsiveness of interactive systems might lead, positively, to new qualities of aesthetic experience. The workshop will be preceded by group discussions and preparatory work using online collaborative tools. The results of the workshop will be presented performatively to the pubic in the SATosphere. The workshop is collectively led and organized by the the SenseLab network. Exploration images for the areas surrounding the DOME/SAT space: [nggallery id=4]...
